What is Ketamine?

Ketamine is a medication originally developed as an anesthetic and is still widely used in medical settings for sedation and pain control. At lower doses, it has been found to be effective in treating certain mental health conditions, including treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, and PTSD.

Ketamine works differently from traditional antidepressants. It primarily acts by blocking NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptors in the brain, which are involved in glutamate signaling. This leads to a cascade of effects that increase glutamate release and stimulate pathways that promote neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to form new connections.

These changes may help “reset” certain neural circuits involved in mood and stress responses, leading to rapid improvements in mood and a reduction in emotional distress for some individuals.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based psychotherapy designed to help individuals process and resolve the lasting effects of trauma and distressing life experiences. Through a structured and supportive process, patients are gently guided to revisit specific memories while engaging in bilateral stimulation (such as guided eye movements). This approach facilitates the brain’s natural capacity to reprocess and integrate these experiences, often leading to a meaningful reduction in emotional distress and a greater sense of clarity, resilience, and internal balance.

The Role of Ketamine in Therapy

Ketamine is a fast-acting medication with the unique ability to create a temporary state of enhanced openness, emotional safety, and cognitive flexibility. At low, carefully guided doses, it may soften protective defenses and quiet fear-based responses, allowing for deeper, more meaningful therapeutic access.

Within this state, individuals are often able to approach previously overwhelming experiences with greater ease, clarity, and self-compassion.

Ketamine-Enhanced EMDR

Ketamine-enhanced EMDR is a thoughtfully integrated experience in which a low-dose ketamine session—administered under medical supervision—is paired with EMDR therapy. The result is a more receptive internal landscape, allowing the therapeutic process to unfold with depth and precision.

This approach is designed to support:

  • Access to material that may have previously felt out of reach
  • A more regulated and supported processing experience
  • The potential for meaningful shifts within a shorter course of care

Who This Is For

This work may be well suited for individuals who feel ready to move beyond insight alone and into deeper resolution—particularly those navigating trauma, persistent anxiety, or depression that has not fully responded to traditional approaches.

A Collaborative, Personalized Experience

Care is highly individualized and begins with a comprehensive evaluation to ensure appropriateness and safety. Treatment is delivered in close collaboration with your EMDR therapist, including Ashley Hartman, with an emphasis on discretion, clinical excellence, and a deeply supportive therapeutic environment.
